Polish Armoured Cavalry Division

This is another of my alt-history formations in my FFT3 project. The division is the cream of the Polish ‘line’ Divisions and is rated as a ‘Regular’ formation and is first in line for new equipment. It differs in organisation to the Mechanised Divisions as it has 2x Armoured Cavalry and 2 x Armoured Regiments so it is the ‘heaviest’ unit in the army designed for exploitation and counter-attack tasks. (Pics to follow once I have finished off a last few bits to complete them following a minor tweak to their TO&E!)

Polish Army

As I’ve done for the Lithuanians here is the full OOB for my Alt-History Poles. It is taken from the IISS’ 1994 Military Balance, the Army is as is but I’ve had to change the Air Force OOB as at this time it was still very ‘Warsaw Pacty’ with a large number of aircraft organised into regiments. To get the new one I combined the Polish Air Force of today with the Nigerian Air Force of 1994 (as Nigeria was the basis of the equipment mix for the Poles). To change equipment from the Soviet kit to Western kit I just looked up the Soviet type on Wikipedia, looked at the ‘See also’ section and picked a type from there, all very clever and scientific! The Border guard OOB came from the pre-WW2 force.

Lithuanian Army

This is the second of my Modern Alt- History forces. I have decided that I would use the TO&E’s of the smaller Gulf States for the Baltic States as they seemed a good fit, being small divisional sized units and with a nice mix of kit that could feasibly be used by the Baltics. The actual size of each army has been altered slightly as I have taken the pre-WW2 forces OOB as a guide, turning infantry regiments into battalions for example and hence some slight changes might be made. As always I’ll be using Mark Bevis’ great lists available from the Wargames Vault for the lower level organisation. The air forces are taken from the Gulf State that is used as the ‘inspiration’. I chose Oman for Lithuania solely by dint that it had the largest population of the three (the others being Bahrain and Qatar).

Not a terrifying force by any means but the Chieftains, picked up from the Brits ‘cheap’ thanks to them introducing the Challenger, are not to be sniffed at. As the Army is a purely defensive force anyway it suffices as a mobile reserve unit. It could also have the Scorpion equipped Armoured Cavalry battalion attached but that is usually split between the 3 Infantry Brigades.

Polish Mechanised Division

OK here is the first Orbat for my Alt-History Modern madness which I have just edited as the TO&E has changed somewhat since inception and the new version of the list has just been released! For the full OOB of the Polish Armed Forces look here: https://tracksandthreads.wordpress.com/2017/05/03/polish-army/

As I’ve mentioned before, I am trying to base the ‘imagined’ forces in this project on real life TO&E’s, with a few tweaks here and there. For the Poles I sort of extrapolated their pre-WW2 units, with a French influence for their organisation and basing their equipment on Vickers products with some French kit thrown in for good measure – Nigeria had just that so that’s where the basis for the equipment mix came from. This also gave Saurer APC’s from Austria and Piranha APC’s from Switzerland, so I had to go for it – this meant I could use Canadian Grizzly/Cougars which are, quite frankly, well cool!

As for organisation I very nearly went the whole Nigerian hog as they’ve got quite a distinct one, but in the end I’ve based it on the Polish Cold War Naval Landing Division, which does give a slightly French feel to the unit as it consists of Regiments that are smaller than Soviet ones but bigger than ‘regular’ battalions.

There are 10 Mechanised Divisions in the Polish Army, 1 being a reserve unit, so form the majority of the Army’s strength.

Mechanised Division

HQ Coy

  • 1 Cmnd OT-64/Sigs LandRover
  • 1 ‘Grom’ SP quad 25mm adg/Grom sam

This is the Chinese type-95, it is the closest thing to a SIDAM turreted vehicle that there is which is what I wanted to replace the ZSU-23-4 the Nigerians use. It is also different enough to be feasibly be a home made Polish vehicle.

    • 3 Panhard m3 apc
  • 3 Amd Coys

This is the Divisional recce unit. Usually it will detach one company to each of the Divisions regiments to act as their recce unit – the Fox’s to the Infantry Regts and 1 Armd Coy to the Armoured Regt.

The OT-64 command stand in the mech and armd Regts are the Regimental HQ’s. The 2 APC command stands are tactical stands to allow for 2 task forces to be formed for specific situations – I felt that 6 companies was a tad too much for one HQ to handle.

Austrian Panzer Grenadier Bgde

Here is the first unit that I have done for FFT3 and my Moderns project (OK not completely finished, but its on the desk – honest!).

Why Austrian? I’m not sure but I’ve always liked the more obscure armies and when I visited the H&R stall at Salute this year I saw that they had released the 4K-4FA and the SK-105 so just thought, why not and you have to start somewhere.

It is a PanzerGrenadier Bgde, modelled on the early 90’s TO&E, (all TO&E’s in this project will be gleaned from MicroMark’s fantastic series available at Wargames Vault) and all vehicles are H&R. I’ve gone for the early 90’s version to give them ATGM as they weren’t allowed them during the Cold War due to Treaty restrictions but they can easily be used for the 80’s by just changing the infantry bases and dropping an APC stand per company – really need to add another PzGren Btln but I’ve managed to get them on the table a couple of times to fight Cold War scenario’s and they have done well both times, it is actually a nice balanced force.

So in FFT3 terms it has:

PzrGren Bgde

  • HQ
    • 1 Cmnd 4k-fu
    • 1 M60a3
    • 1 M88 arv
  • SP Art Btln
    • 1 4k-fu FOO team
    • 3 M109a5
  • Recon Coy
    • 2 recon teams (ar, Pzf-3)
    • 2 Jeep/hmg (will be Pandur when model available!)
  • AD Coy
    • 3 Mistral manpad teams
    • 3 4k-4f-G1

Pzr Grenadier Btln

  • HQ Coy
    • 1 Cmnd 4k-4FA-G2
    • 2 4k-FA-Gw81 sp 81mmM
  • 4 Coys
    • 3 4k-4FA-G1 (12.7)
    • 1 4k-4FA-G2 (20mm)
    • 3 PG (4 AR, 4 lmg, 4 Pzf-3)
    • 1 PG ATGM (3 AR, 3 Pzf-3, 3 Bill atgm)
  • PzrJgr Coy
    • 3 Sk-105

Panzer Btln

  • HQ Coy
    • 1 M60a3
  • 4 Coys
    • 3 M60a3

So here’s the big picture – Panzer Btln on the left, PanzerGrenadiers in the middle and Bgde HQ on the right.

20150916_123215

The Panzer Btln – These lads have quite a few tanks knocking around in Coy and Btln HQ’s so I’ve given them 2 stands in the HQ coy to reflect this rather than include them in the platoons. EDIT – now changed this to 1 command tank due to realising a mistake!

20150916_123230

The PzGren Btln  – Again the 4k-4f APC is a nice model and a great release from H&R as they are used by quite a few armies round the world. I need to do a Btln Cmnd stand which is on the desk and waiting for a new base to turn up from Warbases. With their SP 81mmM and Sk105 Kurassiers in the support Coy they have a nice level of support. I went with 4 stands per company as the platoons are really large and it allows the ATGM to be put into one stand – I figured it works ok. By the way, the BILL ATGM the Austrians use is a great bit of kit – as it is a top attack missile it attacks the side armour in FFT3 which makes it quite a potent weapon, and a nasty surprise to ones opponents!

20150916_123245

Bgde HQ – At the moment: only the M60a3 stand, with 2 attached M42 Duster for AD and a PzrJager Coy from Corp HQ. I’m just finishing this off, waiting on a few bits from H&R for the Recon coy (Jeeps) and need to finish painting the Artillery Btln and the Bgde Manpad Coy. I’ll be doing an attached Engineer Coy too.

One of the good things about this unit is that it can split into 2 balanced combat teams, and even without the ATGM they have quite a good AT punch – the infantry also have good close in AT capability too with their Pzf-3’s.

I’m just waiting for a delivery to arrive to start on an attached Landwehr Battalion – complete with 85mm ATG’s – which will be grown into a Brigade and hope that someone makes a Pandur soon so that I can get started on a Jager Bgde and upgrade the Recon companies.
